DESCRIPTION
Pyrenean Chamois or Isard. Their horns, with the shape of a hook, constitute an attractive trophy, being one of the most elusive mountain animals. Up to 80 cm tall, its summer coat is ruddy brown; in winter it is black/brown with darker patches around the eyes.
Both ,males and females have backward-hooked horns up to 20 cm in length. They browse on grass, lichens and buds of trees. Sure-footed and agile, they are found anywhere up to 2800 m.
Female chamois and their young live in herds; adult males tend to live solitarily for most of the year. During the rut, themales engage in fierce battles for the attention of unmated females.
GEOGRAPHIC RANGE
North-East of Spain, in the Pyrenees Mountains.
HABITAT
Highest rock mountains between 1700 – 2800m.
ACCOMMODATION
Lodging is provided in small hotels and rural houses very close to the hunting area.
HUNTING SEASON
18th October to 28th December.
Rutting period : November.
HUNTING METHOD
Hunting is done by stalking in high mountains.
